Tour Plan
Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera. We will spend the next few days exploring the Danakil Depression—one of the planet's most extreme and otherworldly landscapes. Often referred to as the "hottest place on Earth," this geological wonder lies at the junction of three tectonic plates.
The landscape is a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, with vast salt flats stretching as far as the eye can see, dotted with striking sulfur and mineral formations. The ground beneath your feet displays bright yellows, oranges, and greens created by geothermal activity.
Our destination today is Erta Ale Volcano, one of the region's highlights. Known as the "Smoking Mountain" or the "Gateway to Hell," it is famous for its active lava lake—one of only a few in the world.
Although it is only about 80 km away, the drive can take 5–6 hours due to rough terrain. After a short rest and early dinner at the base camp, you will hike to the summit. Reaching the crater after sunset, you can feel the heat and hear the powerful sounds of molten lava. Later, descend to the base camp and spend the night under the open sky.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Afrera (also known as Lake Giulietti), a hypersaline lake located in one of the hottest regions on Earth.
The lake plays an important role in local salt production. The Afar people extract salt using traditional methods, cutting large salt blocks by hand and transporting them by camel caravans across the desert.
Continue to Hamed Ela Camp, a remote settlement offering basic accommodation. The area is inhabited by the Afar people, known for their resilience and nomadic lifestyle.
Overnight: Camping
Start the day with a visit to Ragad (Asebo) to observe traditional salt mining.
Then continue to the Dallol Depression, one of the lowest points on Earth (116 meters below sea level). The area features colorful geothermal pools, salt formations, volcanic cones, and dramatic landscapes.
After exploring, drive to Mekelle for overnight.
Drive to visit the famous rock-hewn churches of Tigray, including Abuna Yemata Guh, known for its cliff-face location and 15th-century wall paintings.
The church is accessible via a guided hike that includes some climbing. It offers breathtaking views and remarkable ancient frescoes.
In the afternoon, return to Mekelle and fly back to Addis Ababa.
Overnight: Hotel
After breakfast, explore Addis Ababa.
Visit the Ethnological Museum, located in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. The museum showcases Ethiopia’s cultural history, traditions, and diverse ethnic groups.
Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw.
Then visit Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, full of vibrant activity.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian cultural restaurant with music and dance. After dinner, transfer to the airport according to your departure schedule.
